  • A number, every day. One reading a day through her season gives you a line to follow: it rises early on, then falls as she comes toward ovulation.
  • One button. Press once and the meter takes three readings a few seconds apart, then switches itself off. Use the two that agree.
  • A marked probe. The 12 cm probe has a smooth rounded tip and depth marks at 4, 6, 8 and 10 cm, so you place it the same way every time.
  • Rinse and recharge. The body is waterproof for washing, and the 9 V battery in the handle recharges by USB-C.

Kiba Season is a breeding aid, not a diagnosis and not a guarantee of a litter. For an important mating, confirm the timing with your vet’s progesterone test. Breeding cattle? See Kiba Season Cattle: a different probe and different numbers for cows.

Timing the mating

The right day is easy to miss.

A bitch is fertile for only a few days of her season, and the outward signs do not always match what is happening inside. Kiba Season gives you one number a day to write down, so you are following a trend instead of judging by behaviour alone.

How to use it

One reading a day

Hands rinsing the white probe of the Kiba Season under a running tap
Before

Wash the probe

Wash the rod and tip with washing-up liquid and rinse with clean water. It does not need to be dried.

Reading

Place it and press once

With her standing, the probe goes in angled upward to the depth for her size: about 4 cm for small dogs, 6 to 8 cm for medium dogs, about 10 cm for large dogs. Turn it twice, hold still and press the button.

Read the three numbers

The screen shows three readings about three seconds apart. Take the two closest as today’s number. The meter switches off ten seconds later.

After

Write it down

One number a day is the whole method. Note it with the date and you will see the rise and the fall.

Reading the trend

It is the direction that matters.

The maker’s guide: under 200, she is not in season. The number climbs through the first part of her season, then falls. The guide suggests a first mating as it falls through 800 to 600 and a second at 450 to 300. Every bitch is different, so use these as a starting point and follow her own trend.

  • Reads from 10 to 1990
  • Three readings per test
  • Switches itself off

Then the Scope

Know the day, then see the way.

Season tells you when her readings say she is ready. Kiba Scope is the camera insemination kit for that day: a camera at the tip of the probe shows the way to the opening of the cervix on a screen in your hand, so you place the sample by the picture, not by feel. Questions

Good to know before you order.

Something we haven’t covered? Email info@kibaclub.com and a person replies within 24 hours.

How does it tell me when to mate?
It gives a reading from 10 to 1990 that changes through the season. Taken once a day, the readings rise and then fall, and the maker’s guide links the falling part of the curve to the mating window. It is a guide to timing, not a guarantee of a litter.
How deep does the probe go?
The maker’s guide is about 4 cm for small dogs, 6 to 8 cm for medium dogs and about 10 cm for large dogs, and the probe is marked at 4, 6, 8 and 10 cm. If you have not done this before, ask your vet or an experienced breeder to show you.
Is there a version for cattle or horses?
For cows, yes: Kiba Season Cattle has its own probe and its own numbers, and the dog numbers on this page do not apply to a cow. Kiba Club does not offer an ovulation detector for mares: for a mare, timing is a question for your vet.
Does it replace progesterone testing?
No. A progesterone blood test from your vet remains the reference method. Many breeders use a home meter to follow the season day by day and a blood test to confirm.
Is it a pregnancy test?
No. It does not detect pregnancy.
How do I clean it?
Wash the rod and tip with washing-up liquid and rinse with clean water before each use. The body is waterproof.
What powers it?
One 9 V battery (type 6F22) in the handle. The battery supplied recharges by USB-C, so in the US you charge it from any US USB phone charger; there is no mains plug to match.
How long does delivery take?
Orders are prepared within 1 to 3 business days and delivered by tracked courier, usually in 5 to 10 business days. Shipping is free and you get a tracking number by email.
What if it is not right for us?
Tell us within 30 days of delivery and we will arrange a return for a refund. If it arrives damaged or develops a fault in the first year, we repair, replace or refund. Full terms are in the refund policy.

Beagle season tracked cleanly. Started under 200, climbed, then fell. Second mating when it was well down. I would use it again, alongside the vet, not instead of one.

Golden's season was easier to follow with a number instead of guessing from behaviour. It climbed, then fell. I mated on the way down and still did a blood test.

Charged the 9V from a phone charger. Ready when she started. One reading a day is the whole method.

Notebook next to it. Rose for several days, then dropped. That fall is what I was watching. Not a pregnancy test and I am not treating it as one.

The 4 cm mark is what I use for the smaller bitch. Tip is smooth. I rinse it and I do not bother drying it.

Screen shows the three readings clearly. I use the pair that agrees and ignore the outlier. It switches itself off, which is fine once you expect it.

Quick daily check, then it goes back on the shelf. My Lab stood for it. I still booked progesterone before the mating. This just told me when the number started falling.

Flash photo of the screen so I would not forget the three numbers. Two matched, so that was the day. It is a breeding aid, not a diagnosis.

Cap unscrews to the battery. Red rings are there so it seals. Took me a minute to line them up. After that, no issue.

Unboxed it and took the first reading the same day. One button, three numbers, and I wrote down the two that matched. Probe marks made the depth obvious.

I log the number at night. Auto-off is fast if you look away before you write it down. Otherwise the trend is easy to follow.

Kept it on the grooming table between checks. Three readings in a few seconds. For the stud booking I still confirmed with the vet.

Washed the probe and left it on a towel. Rounded tip, marks at 4, 6, 8 and 10 cm. Same placement every morning is what kept the line steady.

Tossed it in the kit bag with the notebook. Used it at home every morning. Depth marks stopped me guessing.

Sits by the bowls between uses. Simple device. I like that there is no app, just a number to write down.

Frenchie fidgets, so the first number sometimes sits away from the other two. When she stands still the readings agree. Useful, not magic.

Battery is a rechargeable 9V with USB-C, which is convenient. The end cap is stiff and the red seal has to sit right or I would not trust a rinse.

Hard to read in a dark room. Fine in daylight. It is a daily trend, and one rushed reading is not enough to time anything.

Mixed. It is a trend tool. I would not time a mating on this alone. Fine as a daily note for my Lab, not a replacement for the clinic.
