What’s in the box
| Kiba Density meter | 1× |
| Glass cuvettes, 10 ml, with caps | 2× |
| Micropipette, 100 to 1,000 µl, with tips | 1× |
| Instruction leaflet | 1× |
- A number, not a guess. A collection that looks thick can be thin and a thin one can be fine. Kiba Density reads the concentration in under a minute, so you know how many doses a collection makes before you split it.
- Two cuvettes, two buttons. Extender in both glass cuvettes, 0.4 ml of raw semen in one. ZERO on the plain one, READ on the sample. The screen shows hundred-millions per ml: 2.14 is 214 million.
- Nothing to buy afterwards. The cuvettes are glass and wash out; there are no disposable cells, strips or reagents. The only thing it uses is the extender you already have.
- Runs on one 9 V battery. More than 200 hours on a single 9 V battery, the maker says, and it switches itself off after ten minutes idle. 290 g, so it lives in the tack room or on the kitchen bench.
Kiba Density is a breeding tool for experienced hands. It is not a laboratory semen analysis and not a veterinary device. It reads concentration; motility and morphology are judged under Kiba Lens or by your vet.

Before you split a collection
How many doses is it?
Under the Lens you see whether they move. What you cannot see is how many there are, and the number decides whether a collection is one dose or four, whether a chilled shipment is worth sending and whether a stud is where he was last season. Kiba Density gives you that number at the bench in under a minute.
How it is used
From the collection to a reading

Extender, then sample
Put 10 ml of your extender into each of the two glass cuvettes. With the pipette, add 0.4 ml of the raw collection to one of them, cap it and turn it over gently a few times.

Plain cuvette, ZERO
Switch on, lower the plain cuvette into the well with its cap on and press ZERO. The screen shows 0.00: the meter has read your extender and taken it out of the result.

Sample cuvette, READ
Swap in the sample cuvette and press READ. The screen shows the concentration in hundred-millions per ml. 2.14 on the screen is 214 million sperm per millilitre of the raw collection.

Write it down
Concentration times volume is the total in the collection; divide by the dose you use and that is how many doses it makes. Keep the readings in a notebook per stud: the trend from season to season is the most useful number of all.

Calibration, said plainly
Made for boars, read for your stud.
The maker calibrates Kiba Density on boar semen and sells it that way in Europe and Asia. Dog and stallion semen scatter light the same way at 470 nm, but the maker publishes no separate curve for them, so use it as we do: the same meter, the same extender, the same dilution every time, and compare a stud with himself from collection to collection. For an absolute count, put a drop on Kiba Count under Kiba Lens.
- Same extender, same dilution, every time
- Compare a stud with himself
- Absolute count on Kiba Count

On the bench with the others
Lens shows, Density counts.
Kiba Lens shows you movement on its screen, Kiba Count gives you a grid count by eye, and Kiba Density gives you a concentration reading in under a minute without counting anything. Together they are the three questions a breeder asks of a collection: are they moving, how many are there, and is he where he was.
- Reads in under a minute
- No counting, no grid
- Glass cuvettes, washed and reused
Side by side
A reading, or a guess by eye
| What matters | Kiba Density | Judging the cup |
|---|---|---|
| Concentration | A reading in hundred-millions per ml | Thick-looking or thin-looking |
| Time | Under a minute, two buttons | Ten minutes counting a grid |
| Consumables | None: glass cuvettes and your extender | Strips or disposable cells |
| Doses per collection | Worked out from the reading | A guess |
The maker calibrates the meter on boar semen and rates it at 98 %. For dogs and horses treat the reading as the same stud’s number from collection to collection, and confirm an absolute count with Kiba Count. Not a laboratory analysis, not a veterinary device.
Our promise
Every collection, counted.
